Derrick Owens joins the Grand Valley State coaching staff for his first season with the Lakers. He comes to GVSU after serving as an assistant coach at Grand Rapids Community College in 2010-11, where he helped the Raiders win an NJCAA regional championship. Owens' basketball career has spanned over 30 years as a coach and teacher.
Owens has coached at the collegiate, high school, and AAU level for many years, while working and directing summer basketball camps for Kentucky's Billie Gillespie in 2007, Michigan's Tommy Amaker from 2002 to 2006, and Michigan State's Tom Izzo in 1999. As a head coach at St. Martin Deporres High School in Detroit, Owens led the school to the MHSAA Class C state championship in 1992 (as interim head coach), 1996, 1998, and 1999.
A member of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM), Owens was a student assistant coach at Eastern Michigan, while also coaching at Schoolcraft Community College, Northern Durham High School (North Carolina), and Allen Academy High School. He coached AAU Team Detroit to the 2009 Reebok National Championship in Las Vegas, Nev. and was named the 1999 Metropolitan Coach of the Year by the Detroit Free Press.
Owens earned his bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies from Wayne State in 2002.
