Dewayne Evans is beginning his second season as an assistant coach for the Lakers. Evans replaced Jeff Bauer who was promoted to the position of top assistant early in the summer of 2008.
Evans joined the Lakers after spending the last two years with the Joy of the Game Illinois Rising Stars AAU program in Deerfield, Ill. Evans worked predominately with the 17U division. This past summer, Evans led his team to the Senior Nationals. Prior to his work with the Rising Stars, Evans spent one year as the assistant track coach at Canyon State Academy in Arizona.
"I am extremely grateful that coach Wesley has given me this opportunity," said Evans. "I am excited to be joining a winning program and I can't wait to get started."
Evans, a 2005 graduate of Oberlin College, was a two sport performer for the Yeomen who lettered in both basketball and track. As a senior, Evans ranked in the top 10 of the North Coast Athletic Conference in scoring, assists, steals, minutes played and free throw percentage. He also received All-Conference in track in 2002.
"We are extremely excited to have Dewayne as a part of our program," said Wesley. "As a young, former two sport athlete, he brings some unique experience to the position. He is well-connected in the Chicago area from his work with the Rising Stars and we look forward to him helping us continue to build the winning tradition that we have established here at Grand Valley."
