ALLENDALE, Mich. - Head coach Jamie Detillion announced the addition of five student-athletes to the baseball program for the 2014 season, his first class announced as head coach of the Grand Valley State baseball team. The class includes four pitchers, all right-handers, three of which are currently pitching at the junior college level, and a high school outfielder.
The junior college pitchers include Adam Poel (Grand Haven, Mich./Muskegon Community College), Kevin Hallberg (Lansing, Ill./South Suburban College) and Aaron Jensen (Big Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Community College). The lone high school pitcher in the class is Ryan McClelland (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) and the outfielder is Tyler Sroczynski (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian).
Poel is entering his second season at Muskegon Community College under head coach Cap Pohlman. Poel, who was voted a team captain for the 2013 season, was voted team MVP, Freshman of the Year and Pitcher of the Year in 2012. A member of the Dean’s List in the fall of 2011 and winter of 2012, Poel went 7-4 with a 1.36 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 87.1 innings pitched. Poel earned Muskegon Chronicle All-Area and All-OK Red First Team honors following his senior season and was an Academic All-State honoree.
Hallberg is entering his second season at South Suburban College under head coach Steve Ruzich. He was named an All-Region IV performer following the 2012 season, when he went 7-1 with a 2.47 ERA and struck out 45 batters in 51 innings pitched. Hallberg prepped at Thornton Fractional South High School. He was named all-conference as both a junior and senior in baseball and was named all-conference in football.
Jensen is entering his second season at Grand Rapids Community College under head coach Mike Cupples. He helped the team to a regional championship in 2012, going 5-3 with a 3.88 ERA. Jensen prepped at Big Rapids High School, where he hit .452 as a senior and struck out 18 batters in 7.0 innings of work. He was named all-district as a sophomore and all-conference as a junior and senior. After his senior year, he was named the offensive player of the year.
McClelland is currently a senior at Brighton High School under head coach Charlie Christner. He went 10-2 with a 0.78 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 81 innings pitched as a junior and was named all-county, all-conference and all-district. He led the team to division, conference, league and regional championships. In addition, he threw a perfect game against Walled Lake Western and a no-hitter against Ann Arbor Pioneer as a junior.
Sroczynski is currently at Illiana Christian High School under head coach Dan Gibson. He was named all-conference first team and all-area second team as a junior after hitting .418 with 38 runs scored, 41 hits, eight doubles, two home runs, 16 RBI and 19 walks. He also helped his team to a conference championship as a sophomore.
The 2013 version of the Grand Valley State baseball team will open up Detillion's first season as head coach on February 23rd with a trip to Rolla, Mo. to take on Missouri S&T for three games over two days.
