Grand Valley State's men's baseball coach Steve Lyon was named the 2003 NCAA Division II North Central Region Coach of the Year. The Lakers defeated Indianapolis, 12-7, to win its first-ever NCAA Division II North Central Region Championship. GVSU advanced to the NCAA DII Baseball World Series for the first time in school history.

Lyon was also named the 2003 GLIAC Coach of the Year. Lyon led the Lakers to a single-season, school-record 37 wins in 2003. Grand Valley won the 2003 GLIAC regular season title and 2003 GLIAC tournament Co-Championship.
