ALLENDALE, Mich. - The 18th-ranked Grand Valley State baseball team has made its 12th straight NCAA Division II Tournament, earning the #3 seed in this year's NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. The Lakers will face St. Joseph's (Ind.) on Thursday (May 16) in Springfield, Mo.
GVSU is one of only three schools in the country to make each of the last 12 NCAA Division II Tournaments (Central Missouri, Tampa) and is coming off a runner-up finish in the 2013 GLIAC Baseball Tournament. The Lakers won the GLIAC regular season championship with a 22-7 conference record this year. It will be the first tournament appearance for Laker head coach Jamie Detillion, who is in his first year at the helm of the GVSU baseball team.
Drury, the #2 seed, will serve as the host of the regional tournament.
The top seed in the tournament will be Ashland, who will take on #6 Bellarmine, a team that won the Great Lakes Valley Conference's automatic bid by winning the conference tournament. Drury will be taking on #5 seed Lewis.
GVSU, which sits at 31-16 overall on the season, faces St. Joseph's (Ind.), a team that comes in with a 30-18 overall record.
The Lakers are 7-4 all-time against the Pumas, with the last meeting coming on March 9th, 2012, when GVSU claimed a 9-3 victory during the annual spring trip to Florida.
The 2013 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament will run from Thursday (May 16) through Sunday (May 19) at Meador Park in Springfield, Mo., home of Drury baseball.
