YPSILANTI, Mich. - The 18th-ranked Grand Valley State baseball team fell to Ashland, 6-4, in the 2013 GLIAC Baseball Tournament Championship game on Saturday (May 11) at Oestrike Stadium.

After the Eagles put up a single tally in the top of the first, GVSU responded by taking the lead in the bottom of the frame, getting an RBI double from senior Stephen Claypool and a bases loaded hit by pitch from sophomore Jesse Abel.

Ashland tied the game in the top of the second and again the Lakers responded in the bottom of the inning. This time it was sophomore Kevin Zak, who hit an RBI single in to center field to score sophomore Mike Nadratowski, who drew a one-out walk. The teams were tied at three after two innings of play.

The Eagles put up a three run top of the third to take control of the game, including a lead-off home run in the inning. Ashland put up another run in the top of the fifth and were up by a score of 6-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, junior Stuart Eisler reached on an error to begin the inning, then moved to second on a groundout. Zak again game up with a big hit, doubling him in to cut the lead to 6-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, GVSU hit in to two quick outs, but then staged a rally, getting singles from both Nadratowski and Claypool to bring the winning run to the plate. However, a groundout to third ended the game.
