Ashland, Ohio - #18 Grand Valley State (37-14) advanced to the second round of the 2004 GLIAC Tournament with an 11-7 victory over Saginaw Valley State Thursday (May 6) afternoon at Ashland University. GVSU advances to play the winner of the Ashland-Wayne State contest Friday (May 7) at 10 a.m.

GVSU opened the scoring with four in the bottom of the third, two coming on a bases loaded double by 1b Scott Allen. The Lakers added two in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-0 lead. SVSU scored two in the top of the seventh, but the Lakers moved ahead 8-2 with a single tally in the bottom of the seventh. The Cardinals pulled to within one run (8-7) with a five-spot in the top of the eighth, three coming on a three-run homer by SS Chris Norton. GVSU regrouped and scored three in the bottom of the inning. CF Brandon McFarland drove in two with a triple and then was driven home by DH Matt Wright.

RHP Jon Micoff improved to 10-2 on the year, yielding two runs and four hits in 6.2 innings of work. Micoff's 10 wins ties the single-season record set by Phil Mixter a year ago. Sean McCleod worked one inning and Joe Finnerty picked up his eighth save of the season by working the final 1.1 innings. DH Matt Wright was 2-4 with three RBI and a triple, while Brandon McFarland was 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. 1B Scott Allen collected three hits in five at bats with two RBI and two runs scored. RF Joe Mertes drove in a pair of runs and LF Nick Sandy chipped in two hits. SS Ryan Lyster and 2B Scott Smith each reached twice with the aid of walks, with Lyster scoring twice and Smith once. GVSU scored 11 runs on 11 hits, while Saginaw Valley State notched seven runs on 10 hits.
