Joplin, Mo. - Scott Allen provided the offense and Matt Rafeld handled the rest as the two led Grand Valley State to an 8-2 victory over South Dakota State on Monday in Joplin, Mo. Allen was 3-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-run home run to lead the Laker offensive attack. Rafeld pitched a complete game, scattering six hits and allowing only one earned run, while striking out six. Eight different players tallied hits for the second straight game as the Lakers improve to 2-1 on the season. GVSU pounded out 10 hits in the game including three extra base hits.
The Lakers fell behind early as the Jackrabbits scored two runs in the first on a double, single, walk and an error. But the Lakers exploded with runs in each of the last four innings, and Rafeld held SDSU in check not allowing another run despite the Jackrabbits reaching base in every inning.
GVSU tied the score with two runs in the fourth. Joe Brunink led off the inning with a single and scored on Allen's sacrifice fly. Matt Wright's two-out single scored the second run of the inning as Kevin Boyd came around to score.
Grand Valley posted three more runs in the fifth as Elijah Beckwith reached base after an error and scored on double by Boyd. Allen's two-run homer accounted for the final two runs of the inning. But the Lakers weren't done as they put two more up in the sixth on a double into the gap by Beckwith. An RBI single by Joe Mertes drove in the final run of the game in the seventh.
