Joplin, Mo. - Grand Valley State lost their season opener 5-0 to Missouri Southern State in Joplin, Mo. on Sunday. GVSU out hit MSSU 6-5 but were unable to push across a run. Senior Nick Bultema took the loss on the mound despite allowing only one earned run and four hits in 4.2 innings. Kevin Boyd led the offensive attack with two hits in three trips, while Tony Pfennig added a double.

The Lakers fell behind 1-0 in the first after the Lions put together two doubles to drive in a run. GVSU packed the bases in the top of the second but was unable to push across a run. MSSU broke the game open with three unearned runs in the fifth and added the final tally in the sixth. David Nitz pitched the final 1.1 innings for the Lakers.
