Joplin, Mo. - Grand Valley State split a twinbill Monday at Missouri Southern State, winning game one 17-6, but falling in the nightcap 3-2. GVSU is now 3-1 on the year and will play Pittsburg State in a doubleheader Tuesday.

Grand Valley State struck early and often in the opening game Monday. The Lakers scored three in the first, followed by two in the second and third. GVSU scored a single run in the fourth, two in the fifth and broke the game wide open in the sixth with a seven spot. The Lakers tallied 17 runs on 16 hits, while committing just one error. RHP Jon Micoff (1-0) picked up the win, going six innings and yielding five runs on six hits.

Freshman SS Lee VanStreain led the offensive attack, going 3-4 with six RBI and three runs scored. VanStrean hit a two-run homer in the second, followed by two-run double and run scoring single. LF Scott Allen hit a three-run HR and added an RBI on a sac fly. DH Matt Wright was 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while CF Brandon McFarland was 2-3 with two runs scored.

As hot as the Lakers were in game one, they were just as cold in game two and dropped a 3-2 decision. GVSU's only hit of the game came off the bat of RF Joe Mertes when he drilled a two-run HR in the top of the sixth to give GVSU a 2-1 lead. MSSU scored two in the bottom half of the sixth to claim the win. Marty Jackimowicz was tagged with the loss, yielding three runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. Lion pitching struck out the Lakers 10 times in the second game.
