NEW ORLEANS - Grand Valley State head coach Jerry Baltes has been named the 2013 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Men's Midwest Region Cross Country Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his career, his 13th regional cross country honor overall.
Baltes led the Laker men's team to its 12th straight NCAA Division II Regional Championship over the weekend at the Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country Course in Somers, Wis., edging out Southern Indiana for the crown.
The women's Midwest Regional Coach of the Year Award went to Dana Schwarting of Lewis.
Officially being named USTFCCCA All-Region honorees were the five men's runners and seven women's runners who finished in the top 25 at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship for the Lakers.
On the men's side, earning USTFCCCA All-Region honors were Alan Peterson (second place), Brent Showerman (fifth), Chris May (12th), Kyle Flores (15th) and Chad Cini (19th). It is the second USTFCCCA All-Region honor for Peterson and the third for Showerman.
For the women, all seven runners competing for GVSU earned all-region honors. Jessica Janecke (second), Allyson Winchester (sixth), Courtney Brewis (seventh), Kendra Foley (12th), Madie Rodts (15th), Jordan Chester (17th) and Molly Slavens (24th) were the seven runners named to the all-region squad. It was the second time that Winchester, Brewis, Rodts, Chester and Slavens have been named USTFCCCA All-Region.
Both Grand Valley State cross country teams are currently in preparation for the 2013 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championship, which will be held in Spokane, Wash. on Saturday, November 23rd. The women's team will be looking to defend its national title and win its third crown in four years.
