MUSKEGON, Mich. - The Grand Valley State cross country teams went just up the road on Friday (Oct. 11) to take part in the Muskegon Jayhawk Invitational, and the men came away with a dominating victory.
The men's team, which was ranked third in Division II in the latest United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings, won the event with only 27 points. The Lakers had seven student-athletes finish in the top 16, including Ethan Barnes, who crossed the line second with a time of 25:38.79 on the 8k course.
David Powell was sixth (26:04.65), Peter Tomkiewicz was ninth (26:22.03) and Greg Madendorp was 12th (26:32.97). The final scored runner was Jeremy Wilk, who finished 14th (26:40.38) and set off a string of three straight Lakers in the results. Kousei Yajima crossed the line in 15th (26:43.04) and Bryce Bradley finished 16th (26:44.29).
Running unattached, redshirt Wuoi Mach finished fifth at the meet with a time of 25:58.29.
On the women's side, only three Lakers competed and GVSU was not scored in the meet because of that. Taylor Smith crossed the line seventh (19:53.28) and teammate Natalie Nelson was just behind in eighth (19:57.24). Anne Redd finished 19th (20:33.89) in the 5k race.
There were actually three Laker student-athletes who swept the podium in the women's race, but were running unattached and are redshirting this season. Rachel Bendewald won the event with a time of 19:16.35, while Alex McBride was second (19:23.01) and Kelly Haubert was third (19:32.95).
The women's team is currently ranked first in Division II in the latest USTFCCCA rankings.
Both teams will now have next weekend off as they prepare for the cross country postseason. The next contest for the teams will be the 2013 GLIAC Championship in Houghton, Mich. on October 26th.
