EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Grand Valley State cross country teams got off to a great start in the 2013 season with a solid showing at the Spartan Invite on Friday (Sept. 13). The women's team put four runners in the top five of the non-D1 race and eight in the top 15. On the men's side, six Lakers finished inside the top 10 of the non-D1 race.
Being competed at Forest Akers East Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State, it was sophomore Jessica Janecke for the women who crossed the line first with a time of 21:19 to lead a group of three Lakers. Following just behind her in second was senior Courtney Brewis (21:25) and junior Allyson Winchester (21:32).
In fifth place was junior Hannah Osborn (21:45) to give GVSU four runners in the top five.
Also with solid finishes were sophomore Jordan Chester in 10th (21:57), senior Molly Slavens in 11th (22:03), senior Madie Rodts in 13th (22:08) and freshman Alison Work in 15th (22:10). Newcomer and graduate student Alycia Thurston finished 19th (22:24), while junior Kelsey Young (21st; 22:28) and freshman Amy Creutz (22nd; 22:28) also had top-25 finishes.
On the men's side, junior Alan Peterson finished in third (24:34) to pace GVSU, while senior Larry Julson was just behind in fourth (24:46). Senior Josh Moskalewski finished sixth (24:53) and was followed closely behind by sophomore Chad Cini (eighth; 24:55), sophomore Spencer Pageau (ninth; 24:57) and senior Brent Showerman (10th; 24:58) to give the Lakers six runners in the top 10.
Strong finishes were also had by sophomore Ricky Perez (21st; 25:25), sophomore Casey Routledge (22nd; 25:25) and junior Steve Krauss (23rd; 25:56). Sophomore Joe Duff (27th; 25:32) and freshman Mitchell Wilkins (28th; 25:33) also recorded top-30 finishes.
The Lakers will take next weekend off before getting back to the trails on Saturday, September 28th for the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. at 1 p.m.
