July 26, 2013

NEW ORLEANS - The Grand Valley State track and field teams dominated the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) awards, as both the men's and women's teams were named 2013 Indoor Scholar Team of the Year, while 33 individuals were named All-Academic.

For the women's team, it is the third straight time they have won the indoor Scholar Team of the Year award, by virtue of being the highest-finishing team at the NCAA Division II National Championships with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. The current three-year streak gives GVSU the most indoor Scholar Team of the Year honors since the award was first given out in 2007. The Lakers also still hold the record for most outdoor Scholar Team of the Year honors with three (2010-12), although Johnson C. Smith claimed the award this season.

Individually, GVSU placed 21 women on the All-Academic honors list, pacing all of Division II and the only team with 20 or more recipients. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have reached a provisional or automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in either indoor or outdoor seasons. The student-athletes earning All-Academic honors, in alphabetical order, are below:

Courtney Brewis, Katelyn Cliff, Caley Faulkner, Katelyn Fox, Lisa Galasso, Leiah Hess, Kristen Hixson, Brittney Jackson, Jessica Janecke, Monica Kinney, Jordyn Kiser, Krista Nauseda, Natalie Nelson, Amy Reynolds, Jennifer Schornak, Laura Schroeder, Carly Scott, Kelcie Severson, Molly Slavens, Alisha Weaver and Alison Work.

The men's team was also named indoor Scholar Team of the Year after placing fourth at the NCAA Division II Championship and being the highest-placing team with a grade point average of at least 3.0. It is the second time the program has won the indoor Scholar Team of the Year award, and the first since 2007. The Lakers also won an outdoor Scholar Team of the Year award back in 2007. This season's outdoor award went to Western State.

Individually, the men's squad led Division II with 12 USTFCCCA All-Academic honors and was the only school with double-digit recipients.

Ethan Barnes, Nathan Fraeyman, Jake Isaacson, Jay Lechner, Tendo Lukwago, Spencer Pageau, Alan Peterson, Daniel Pung, Casey Routledge, Jesse Schwartz, Brent VanEnk and Jeremy Wilk.
