The Anchor-Bone Trophy
The Anchor Bone Trophy is presented to the winner of the GVSU vs. FSU football game each year. The trophy made its debut in 2002 and was awarded to Ferris State in honor of Matt Sklom, an FSU player who passed away the week before the rivalry was supposed to take place.
Ferris State dominated the rivalry during the first nine games in the 1970s, losing only two during that time span. While Ferris State would start the rivalry on a 7-2 run, the Lakers would turn the tables in the 1980s, winning nine of the 10 played in that decade. The Lakers and the Bulldogs would fight to a close 5-4-1 series during the 90s, with the Lakers narrowly holding the one game advantage. Grand Valley didn't drop a game to Ferris in the the 2000s. In 2010, GVSU began the new decade with an impressive 41-0 win in Big Rapids in Matt Mitchell's first year at the helm. Currently, the Lakers own a 26-12-1 overall record against their West Michigan rival, Ferris State.
The Wooden Shoes Trophy
When Grand Valley State suits up against Wayne State, it represents the east side of the state vs. the west side due to the each schools geographic location. The Wooden Shoes Trophy was designed to represent that rivalry. In the first meeting between the two teams in 1975, Wayne State won 15-6. The Warriors would end up winning four of the first 10 games in the cross state match-up, winning two in a row in 1983-84. Since then, it's been all GVSU. The Lakers have not lost to Wayne State since 1984, with their most impressive win coming in 2001 when Brian Kelly coached Grand Valley to a 77-12 win. GVSU leads the series, 28-5.
