Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State is in second place in the 2002-03 NACDA Directors' Cup Division II Standings after the completion of the winter sports season. The Lakers also have a large lead in the GLIAC Presidents' Trophy standings for the year. The NACDA Director's Cup is given annually to the top athletic program in the country, while the Presidents' Trophy honors the top school in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. GVSU finished second in last year's NACDA Directors' Cup, and have won four straight Presidents' Trophies.
GVSU has tallied 498 points towards the NACDA Cup, including 167 in the winter sports season. South Dakota State sits atop the standings with 554 points, after earning 341 points this winter. UC-Davis, who has won the past three NACDA Directors' Cups, sits in third with 469 points. The Lakers are ahead of last year's pace as they concluded the 2001-02 winter season with 423 points and were in fifth position.
Winter sports that earned points for the Lakers by advancing to NCAA tournament competition were women's indoor track & field, men's and women's swimming & diving and women's basketball. Women's track led the way with a seventh place finish that garnered 72 points. Men's and women's swimming and diving placed 19th and 20th, respectively, to pick up 70 total points. Women's basketball placed 33rd and was rewarded with 25 points. Points are awarded evenly to each sport with the national champion receiving 100 points.
The Lakers are headed toward their fifth straight GLIAC Presidents' Trophy as they conclude the winter season with 109.5 points, 39 points ahead of second place Northern Michigan. GVSU has won six GLIAC titles, and finished second in three others. Women's basketball and women's swimming each posted second place finishes in this past sports season. Track and field won both the men's and women's indoor titles, but for this award their indoor finish is combined with the outdoor finish for the final standings.
